Křivoklát is one of the oldest castles of Bohemian princes and kings where the exposition of Central Bohemian late Gothic art and the exposition of the development of the castle till 17th century is placed. There is also the Fürstenberg´s family picture gallery and the exhibition „Hunting arms of 17th – 19th century“.
The castle is picturesquely situated on a promotory overlooking the valley of Rakovnicky river, 70 km from Prague. A wooden hunting castle stood here in the early 12th century, and was rebuilt as a stone castle after the mid-13th century. Numerous Gothic reconstructions were carried out particularly during the reign of Vladislav II (1471-1516). In the 16th century the castle served as a state prison. The dominant feature of the building is a round, 32 m high tower from the 13th century.
There is also the chateau chapel with a valuable altar, a 40 m deep castle well, and a collection of medieval instruments of torture in the prison.
